Newcastle to Glenrothes

Glenrothes is a wonderful airport, with a tarmac runway, about 15 miles north of Edinburgh. The Tipsy Nipper restaurant serves great food, and if you spend more than six pounds, your landing fee is waived. I think it's halved if you buy fuel too.

It took Richard and I about 1 hour 20 minutes (with a headwind) to fly our TB-9 last September. (We took life jackets for the 10 minutes or so over the Firth of Forth.) Scottish Info were very helpful, and before coming in to a bumpy (the wind not the pilot) landing at Glenrothes, we talked to Edinburgh approach as we skirted their CTR.

Glenrothes made us very welcome, and we had a lovely lunch watching PA-28s, C150/2s and Diamond Katanas coming in and out. We also saw the arrival of an MB-8 (?) Autogyro. We decided it looked good for hedge hopping.

Returning that afternoon the weather was CAVOK and gave us an excellent view of Winfield aerodrome, a former RAF station just west of Berwick upon Tweed. (Look it up in Pooley's and get advice on runway surface state before arriving.)

As the cloud built up over the Northumberland countryside, we kept to the coast and then slipped under the cloud base on our way back to Newcastle

Verdict at the end of the day was "60 minutes in Scotland was not enough."
