The Beney Trust
The James and Sylvia Beney Trust

Introduction

This website is designed to explain the origin and current function of these two grant making trusts and to inform anyone considering making a speculative application to either trust.

These two trusts were originally funded by proceeds from the estate of James Beney (1921 - 1990), co-founder of Walton Sound and Film Services.

Today their endowments have increased through capital appreciation, gifts and a legacy from estate of Sylvia Beney (1931 - 2003).

Their purposes
The Beney Trust

The trust deed states that the trust exists for
"The advancement of the Christian religion and the advancement of education"

The James and Sylvia Beney Trust

The trust deed states that the trust exists
"(1) To support registered charities whose aims and objectives include the promotion of the Christian gospel and such ancilliary activities as assist these aims. (2) To support Christian workers in full or part time ministry and those seeking training for such work including the provision of living accommodation for such workers and their families.

Current Funding Priorities
The Beney Trust

Within the annual budget of around £2,500 the trustees make small grants for purposes and projects recommended to them.

The James and Sylvia Beney Trust

With a annual budget of around £12,000 the trustees are currently fully committed to supporting two very different projects. These are

  • The Anglican Diocese of Tamale in Ghana where we are supporting a number of people in training for the priesthood. Tamale Diocese covers much of Northern Ghana which is itself one of the poorest regions of the Angican communion.
  • The Naked Truth Project which works to provide information, support, education and help for those with an addiction to pornography.

Applications

Each trust has commitments some way into the future. However worthy a cause, the trusts can not support that cause if it falls outside the relevant trust deed for either trust. For causes which do fall within the trust deed, any applicant should bear the following in mind:

  • At present there is no budget for unsolicited applications
  • Applications which arrive in envelopes which bear first class stamps or which are larger than necessary (i.e. requiring Large Letter stamps if items could have been folded) will raise questions about value for money
  • Applicants which are registered charities but whose accounts or annual returns have been filed late with the Charity Commission will need to explain why this was the case
  • Applications which fall outside the trust deed will not be acknowledged
